造山带的前沿科学问题之一是如何实现其向陆内的大规模水平生长。在造山过程中,前陆褶皱-逆冲带会以前展式、后展式或者混合式等形式扩展,形成包含双重逆冲构造和逆冲叠瓦扇等典型构造样式在内的薄皮或厚皮逆冲推覆构造。前陆盆地也会逐渐卷入变形,并发生向稳定克拉通方向的迁移。前陆褶皱-逆冲带的扩展配合前陆盆地的迁移,这样的前陆系统活动形成了造山带大规模的水平生长。
喜马拉雅山是地球上海拔最高的山脉、与青藏高原一起组成了世界第三极,促成了亚洲季风环流,使处于副热带高气压带的本应干旱贫瘠的我国东南沿海变成了湿润富饶的江南。喜马拉雅山的隆升过程一直是地球系统科学研究的国际前沿,那么如此宏伟的山脉究竟是何时、如何开始隆升的呢?
