由于大陆地壳密度较低而产生的正浮力，大陆俯冲在很长的时间被认为是不可能的；但随着柯石英、斯石英等高压矿物的发现，大陆俯冲被认识到是可能的，并在随后的研究中被广泛证实。传统观点认为，大陆俯冲的主要驱动力是先期俯冲下去且密度较大的大洋板片拖拽作用。然而，大陆俯冲的具体机制依然不明确，是否存在其他机制导致大陆岩石圈俯冲？特别是克拉通型大陆岩石圈能否发生俯冲？
地球存在多个圈层，但不同圈层间相互耦合，使得地球热和构造作为整体进行演化，这种演化过程影响了地球内外圈层相互作用的方式，而内外圈层的相互作用又与地表生物圈息息相关。
